3 to 5 Year Old Programs

Many of the children at Ravinia Nursery School spend the two years prior to kindergarten attending first the Morning and then the Afternoon programs.  For both programs there is a 7:1 child to teacher ratio, with no more than 20 students in a class.  We offer two Morning and two Afternoon classes each year.  Both classes meet Monday through Friday.

Morning Program for 3 and 4 Year Olds:

Children who are ages 3 and 4, attend in the morning from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m.  The transition from home to school is the main goal for the morning program.  Because we view separation as a process rather than an event, we continually support the feelings of both the child and parents.  Consistency is maintained from day to day so the children feel a sense of routine, predictability and control.  We focus on outdoor play, free play indoors, arts and crafts, music, stories, singing, and socialization.  Throughout the year various seasonal related themes are explored.  A classroom favorite includes the children experiencing the concept of metamorphosis through the observation of classroom caterpillars who are eventually released on the playground as butterflies.

Afternoon
Program for 4 and 5 Year Olds:
Children who are ages 4 and 5, attend in the afternoon from 12:30 - 3:00 p.m. Kindergarten readiness is the main goal for the afternoon program. Throughout the week children have many opportunities to practice language and literacy skills or to work on their math skills by counting or sorting or classifying objects. They have opportunities to talk about similarities and differences and to create patterns. They are encouraged to ask questions as a way to seek out information. In essence, we are trying to model for them how to learn and to problem solve both individually and as a group. We also create an alphabet book throughout the year. We talk about letters as upper case and lower case and stress the sound that each letter makes.
